Item Description
Copeland 018-0091-19 crankcase heater, a 480 volt, 70 watt belt-style heater built to wrap around the lower shell of a refrigeration or air conditioning compressor. The band carries two part numbers: Copeland's own 018-0091-19 and the heater maker's code BKR 142-840028-045.
A crankcase heater keeps the compressor oil warmer than the coldest point in the refrigeration circuit while the compressor is off. Without it, liquid refrigerant migrates into the crankcase during the off cycle, dilutes the oil and foams out on start-up, which washes bearings and can slug the valves. Copeland specifies crankcase heaters on many scroll and semi-hermetic compressors installed outdoors or in systems with large refrigerant charges.
The 018-0091 family is built in several voltage and wattage combinations, so the voltage on the replacement must match the control circuit feeding it. This one is the 480V version for commercial rooftop and condensing units wired on 480V three-phase service, where the heater is fed from one leg.
