Inductive proximity sensors detect metal without contact, which is why they replace mechanical limit switches anywhere a moving part must be sensed reliably millions of cycles: end-of-travel on cylinders, part-present checks on conveyors and indexers, and speed or rotation sensing on shafts. The shielded barrel lets the sensor mount flush in metal.

Bulletin 872C is Allen-Bradley's standard general-purpose line, so this is a direct replacement on any machine already specifying it.

Rockwell's own datasheet gives Switching Mode N/O and prints NO in the catalogue description; the PNP half of the claim was right, the NC half was wrong and is the opposite of the product. Barrel diameter, length, housing material, switching frequency, connection type, operating temperature range and IP rating were absent from the previous entry and have been added from the same datasheet.
