Item Description
Buehler TransOptic, product code 20-3400-080, is a transparent compression mounting compound supplied in a 5 lb (2.3 kg) container. Buehler, of Lake Bluff, Illinois, is a long established supplier of metallographic sample preparation equipment and consumables.
In metallography and materials analysis, a small specimen is encapsulated in a resin mount so it can be ground, polished and examined under a microscope. Compression mounting does this in a mounting press, where resin and specimen are heated under pressure in a cylindrical mold. TransOptic is a thermoplastic acrylic, poly (methyl methacrylate) per the SDS, that Buehler specifies for molding at 350 F (177 C) and 2100 psi (145 bar). It produces a clear mount with a hardness of 80 Shore D. Because the mount is transparent, the technician can see the specimen and locate a precise feature, weld, coating or defect through the resin while grinding to a target plane. Buehler notes the compound needs a longer cycle, and proper time at temperature and slow enough cooling avoid cloudiness and crazing.
Metallurgical labs, failure analysis groups, quality control departments, universities and electronics and coatings labs use TransOptic with steels, aluminum, copper alloys, plated layers and ceramics.
Available from King Surplus inventory in Del Rio, Texas.
