The SyntheSys Research BA400 Bit(A)lyzer 400 is a bench bit error rate tester, part number BA400-01A. A bit error rate tester sends a known digital pattern through a device, cable, link or channel and compares what comes back bit for bit. The BitAlyzer line reports bit and bit error counts and rates along with burst error and block error statistics, which helps engineers find not only how many errors occur but when and how they cluster.
SyntheSys Research was a Menlo Park, California test equipment company active from 1989 to 2010, known for its BitAlyzer error analyzers; the 400 in the model name marks its speed class, listed by a distributor as 400MHz.
