Item Description
This is a brass lever handle gas cock, a quarter turn plug valve, stamped HAYS on the body. Hays, now Hays Fluid Controls, is a long established American maker of brass valves and fittings. The record identifies it as a 7400 series valve with a 1 inch female NPT connection; the size and series stampings on this unit are worn and could not be read in the photos.
A gas cock uses a tapered plug with a port through it. Turning the lever a quarter turn lines the port up with the pipe to open the line or turns it across the pipe to shut it, and the handle position shows whether the valve is open or closed at a glance. Gas cocks of this style serve as manual shutoff valves ahead of gas appliances, burners, heaters, dryers and laboratory or shop equipment, where a fast, visible shutoff is required.
